We all know Tobey Maguire from the Spider-man movies, which he had spent a lot of time on. Now Tobey is trying to do a bit of producing. Tobey will be producing movie based on a comic originally published by Red 5 Comics. Afterburn is about a postapocalypic Earth where the Eastern Hemisphere has been devastated by solar flare, which leaves this area abandoned by civilization but inhabited by mutated people and creatures. A group of people from a part of the Earth that has not been devastated, come into this area to recover treasures, such as the Mona Lisa and the Crown Jewels.

This movie sounds like it has a good story and could be a very interesting movie if done right. We don’t know if Tobey Maguire will be in the movie or not but I would not be surprised if he is. Neal Moritz (I am Legend) will be alongside Tobey on this project so it might be good. We’ll keep you posted on this story.

   Collider has a huge article featuring producer Mike De Luca talking about adapting video games to movies.  In the article, Mike De Luca talks about how much story there really is in the Metal Gear games and how it does not have to be like other video game movies that are no good.  Here’s what De Luca had to say about Metal Gear Solid.

“For me adapting a video game is just like adapting a book or a play or any other…whenever you’re adapting from another medium for film you try to take into account what you need to do to make it a movie.  With books it’s how you compensate for not being inside a character’s head and with video games I think what you have to compensate for is the loss of interactivity, you know.  What makes video games fun is that you get to be the character and you’re sitting there ruling the universe and it’s a really first person interactive experience.  When you’re in your theatre seat, you’re stuck with these subjective versions of the story and the game from a director or the writer’s point of view.  You can’t interact with what’s going on so whatever turns you on about the game, you’re immediately disadvantaged in the theatre because you’re not feeling anything which I think ups the ante for how good the story has to be and how good the movie has to be because we’re going in at a disadvantage that you’re not going to get the excitement or the adrenalin rush of doing it yourself, so we have to do it for you in a way that makes up for that.” 

 “So I think the bar is higher and I think in the past, people haven’t realized that they set the bar low for video game movies thinking that oh, there’s a built in audience and we don’t need to go crazy with this movie. We just need to get it out there and people will just go see it anyway.  I think that’s kind of a rip-off so…I tried with the first Mortal Combat movie to honor the…I mean that game is like pre-historic at this point but we tried to honor the Enter the Dragon type of storyline of those characters and not throw something out there that was total rip-off and on this one the kind of Cain and Able story between Solid Snake and Liquid Snake and their relationship with their father and the storyline of Metal Gear Solid 4 has the makings….like there’s so much story in Metal Gear as opposed to other video games that I think it’s going to be a challenge but it’s an upscale problem to have some much thematic subtexts and story material to draw from so I think we have a leg up already in that it’s such a rich universe and Kojima is like George Lucas in terms of creating this universe so what it says about war by proxy in this kind of future where war has been outsourced to private companies I think can be almost very topical and also kind of satirical in like a “Robocop” kind of way, so I think if we can get a script that honors the storyline of all 4 games, but that also has a cinematic aesthetic you know the kind of aesthetic Verhoeven brought to “Robocop” or the kind of aesthetic the Wachowski’s brought to “The Matrix”.”

    Another fresh package of images, this time being from what we think will be one of the summer’s biggest hits, Speed Racer. We can honestly tell our self that Speed Racer will be a blockbuster favorite because of what we seen so far, and a bonus that includes the magic touch of The Wachowski Brothers. Luckily our hands got some of the few new images, as well as some of the quotes, including detailed explanations behind the visual style straight from multiple visual effects supervisors.

“The Wachowsk Brothers realized that real racing was not what they were after,” says Muhen Leo, an effects supervisor. “So the idea of cars fighting one another came about early on. The idea is that drivers have such elaborate control over the cars that they could do kicks and spins and hit each other.”  

“Working almost exclusively with green-screen sets was challenging,” says Christina Ricci, who plays Speed’s sidekick/girlfriend Trixie, “…but “everybody had a really great sense of humor about the whole thing. The brothers were just like, ‘Okay! Yes. You can’t see it, but, um, today you’ll be in the snow.”  

Because the actors were not really racing, they were plopped instead into hydraulically-controlled cockpits that would bob and weave in real time along with what the cars were supposed to be doing on screen. “We gave the directors a joystick that would allow them to simulate other cars bumping into them,” says Leo.  

Matthew Fox spent two months working on Racer X’s distinctive voice in the movie. “I was sweating it pretty hard,” says Fox. “Those blade glasses are very dark and without the use of your eyes, you’re finding other ways of making the audience want to find who this person is.”  

The Wachowskis “wanted to incorporate some of the limitations of ’60s cell animation in the movie,” says Leo. Explains fellow effects supervisor Kim Libreri: “The backgrounds are mostly from photographic elements that have been shot from locations around the world [and then] intensely processed to be super-colorful and super-contrast.”"Do you remember the 1980s video game Outrun,” asks Libreri, “with the palm trees flying past? A lot of the movie looks like that. But instead of using painted elements that they used the early days [of anime]. There are actually photographic elements flying past the road.”  

Speed Racer hits theaters May 9th, 2008 (wide).

    We have fresh new images from the new Marvel comic adaptations Iron Man. This package of images includes Iron Man facing off with the film’s main villain Iron Monger, played by Jeff Bridges. The images look pretty cool but some of us are still doubtful about Iron Man’s success. Iron Man hits theatres May 2nd, 2008 (wide), Paramount Pictures.

    Julie Benz has signed to star in the latest installment of Lionsgate/Twisted Pictures franchise, Saw V. The movie will be directed by David Hack, who assisted as a production designer in the previous Saw 2, 3, and 4th films. No word on the role she will be playing, but it has been said that her character will be the “elegant” type.

    After the tragic death of director Anthony Minghella, questions about his current projects have been asked. His current project is a segment of the urban ode film New York, I Love You. Minghella had written but not cast or set about shooting his segment of the film. Filming has been schedule to begin in the month of April in Manhattan City. It has been transpire today that Shekhar Kapur will take over Minghella directorial duties. Kapur has announced that before Minghella went into surgery, he was told by Minghella to finish and carry out his vision for the film. Kapur also had stated:

“He told me his film was about the value of life and how people sometimes just throw away their lives, unable to look beyond into the real beauty of it. I will direct the film now — with Anthony in my heart and in presence of his soul.”

As for the film itself, it has been described as a “love story.”

    We are all waiting for the new Indiana Jones movie, well I know I am, and can’t wait to see if it will live up to the expectations we all hope it does. To keep us happy until the film comes out, we have found some pictures from the movie thanks to empire and the raider. Enjoy! 

To be honest, the only thing I found funny in the commercials for Superhero Movie was that guy acting like Tom Cruise. The actor’s name is Miles Fisher, and I must say that he does an excellent job at portraying Tom Cruise in the film Superhero Movie. He captures Tom’s facial expressions, completely nails his energetic laugh and other worldly gaze. I think it’s funny how these people won’t leave Tom Cruise alone, even though I think he brings it on himself a little. Whatever the case may be, it’s very funny and entertaining in my opinion. Poor Tom Cruise, he just can’t get a break. Well, I think he gets a break in this film, but not the kind of break he is looking for. Judging from what the commercials show, I think Tom learns a thing or two about earth. One of the things he learns about the planet earth, which he clearly is not from, is the law of gravity. Unfortunately, this part of the film is not on the clip that was posted. I guess we have to go see the film to see what happens to good old Tom.     Summit Entertainment has put the sci-fi thriller Countdown into production. Countdown is based on a classic episode of The Twilight Zone titled Death Trip, by Richard Matheson.

    Michael Brandt was chosen to direct Countdown, Countdown being his directorial debut. According to Summit production chief Erik Feig, Michael Brandt was the choice to go with because he outfits larger interest in supporting new talent. Brandt is in the processes of rewriting the screenplay along with Derek Hass, whom both were involved in the films 3:10 to Yuma and 2 Fast 2 Furious, and they also wrote the screenplay to the upcoming adaption Wanted from Universal.

    Death Trip revolves around a group of astronauts who land on a planet only to find a crashed spaceship and corpses that frighteningly resemble their own. They then must piece together where they are and whether they might in fact already be dead.
